That may be one reason I felt drawn to France... among others!

For the French, high on the list of criteria for a "nice restaurant" will be the ambiance, the climate, how it feels to be there. And I find that more and more true in the States, not just "good quick service".

Never been to Paris?... You must come visit! Full of vibrant public spaces ... and other wonders.

Then Paris is FULL of vibrant public spaces! Almost every sidewalk café is a place as you describe: where people just hang out to relate and exchange and watch life go by. Could almost say they are the French version of Starbucks, but without wireless which is why starbucks has been so successful here. Conversation is a favorite past time here; people will redesign the world till the wee hours of the morning! Maybe that's why world café is such a well received methodology.

OK... and in Boston?

Quincy Market? Fenway Park?...

The former mayor of Providence has made downtown which used to be a place you'd want to avoid really vibrant. Summer water festivities with fire on the river, it's amazing what he's done...

BTW, there are others in the Jersey area. I followed your initiative and put myself on the map ... but will have to have a word with the map administrator... You can only put yourself in ONE PLACE on the map ... and I have 2 "homes" (as many of us do today).  There are now 1960 members (you're the 1960th!) and many are not on the map. But it does give a nice idea of the growing mushroom...

What is your idea of a "vibrant public space"? I love the concept!
