How did you learn about Art of Hosting (please add the date and place) and what attracted you to it?
I was working as the Director of Union Development for the Canadian Union of Public Employees (a Canadian trade union) and I was exploring new approaches to do union education work and movement building. I had already been exposed to Open Space and World Cafe and wanted to do further training. Google led me to the Art of Hostimg web site and I was attracted to the notion of a practice of hosting meaningful conversations. I thought such a practice would be very helpful to building a powerful and engaged union membership. I organized a training for our department at CUPE and by the end most were hooked and the practice has expanded to other unions in Canada. This began in 2007 in Ottawa.
Tell us about your experience with Art of Hosting as part of your life and work. What would you say your competence in it is? (new, starting practitioner, experienced practitioner, steward)
I would describe myself as an experienced practioner and a catalyst for others to learn the Art. I have practiced the Art of Hosting to do educational work with working class union folks, and to do organizational building through relationship building and making all kinds of connections through meaningful conversation.
What is the primary field/topic/focus in your hosting work?
My focus of work is in progressive Canadian movements, particularly the Canafian labour movement. I now work as Director of regional operations for the Public Service Alliance of Canada, another Canadian trade union.
