Hosting mentally ill or addicted persons

Dear folks,I would very much appreciate your wisdom on hosting conversations where many participants are mentally ill, have drug addictions or very limited confidence in speaking due to lifetimes of abuse or grinding urban poverty. My few years of AOH practice have mostly been with middle-class folk who are educated, know the basic social 'rules of engagement' and are used to being speaking in groups. The particular instance I'm involved with at present is a group of very marginalized people,…See More

Profile Information

How did you learn about Art of Hosting (please add the date and place) and what attracted you to it?
came to AoH via Harrison Owen, Christian Balddwin and a gift of the universe (finding the website serendipitously while searching for ways of deepening my group facilitation practice)
Tell us about your experience with Art of Hosting as part of your life and work. What would you say your competence in it is? (new, starting practitioner, experienced practitioner, steward)
AOH has become the milieu from which I do all my community development work, mostly with organizations serving people marginalized by poverty the political/economic system and mindsets fostered by affluence.
What is the primary field/topic/focus in your hosting work?
Social service agancies involved in housing, homelessness, justice, food security.
A major challenge is: how people with mental illness and addictions, no experience in keeping agreements, talking together in groups, attention deficits etc. can participate in AOH practices. When we can get the practrices working, the benefits of the philosphy are only too apparent.
Where do you live/work?
Peterborough, Ontario, Canada
Are there interests/passions that you'd like to share?
Transitioning to new ways of being community inclusively
Hosting safe and nourishing space for leaders to renew selves and support each other

Well, it's certainly nice to meet you, even if virtually! Ontario sounds nice right about now as it's 105 degrees in Dallas today. Of course, we could review in January. Have a super day!
