How did you learn about Art of Hosting (please add the date and place) and what attracted you to it?
This subject and website came to my attention during a conversation with a colleague who experienced a retreat organized around The Art of Hosting. She indicated it was very successful for her group. I thought it sounded as though it was related to a project on which we worked two years ago that incorporated the idea of "gracious space" which I found intriguing.
Tell us about your experience with Art of Hosting as part of your life and work. What would you say your competence in it is? (new, starting practitioner, experienced practitioner, steward)
This is brand new to me. Although I believe I understand the basis for it, I would like to work at developing my Hosting skills as I work with community organizations and as a volunteer exercise leadership roles in several other nonprofit organizations.
What is the primary field/topic/focus in your hosting work?
Governance of organizations. I am hopeful I can use Hosting to bring better results for my clients and my volunteer work.
Where do you live/work?
I live in Helena, Montana, but work where people want my expertise.
Are there interests/passions that you'd like to share?
At this moment I am most interested in finding ways to deal with community issues that transcend the overt political polarization I see. There is a self-centered focus and aggressive advocacy for single points of view that undermines our ability to solve "wicked" problems. I'm hopeful that The Art of Hosting will provide me with tools I can use to help people work together more productively and will motivate me to keep plugging away at difficult work.
