How did you learn about Art of Hosting (please add the date and place) and what attracted you to it?
I became aware of it during my studies in Karlskrona Sweden in the Masters of Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability 2008/09 where I both experienced and hosted some conversations using open space, world cafe and variations. I recently completed the AOH training in Karlskrona March 2011.
I am attracted to learning to become more conscious of the subtleties that create different dynamics within groups, and really just being around and living with people and a way that engages head, heart and hands.
Tell us about your experience with Art of Hosting as part of your life and work. What would you say your competence in it is? (new, starting practitioner, experienced practitioner, steward)
I've been a teacher for 10 years, so many of the ways of hosting feel very familiar even from that realm. I have loved my experiences in working with groups, both for work and creative projects (for example writing a song together). I would like to explore and develop my competencies here more, and I am interested in where this might meet with conflict resolution. A question for example: If we could have got those world leaders from the COP 15 summit in an AOH style event, would the outcome have been different? Could it have been? To what extent can these subtleties influence content and outcome?
What is the primary field/topic/focus in your hosting work?
The intersection of sustainability and human/personal growth and development is where I'm most interested in exploring. My first thesis explored these questions and we wrote a prototype for a guidebook called 'Sustainable Selves'. I'd like to complete this work and perhaps develop workshops conversations around that. I am also pretty passionate in exploring how and what all this that I am learning and living over here in Europe might add to Perth, Australia... my home.
