The Art of Hosting

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to share with you a little bit about the 2012 Leading Edge Summit …

The Summit is a leadership development event for leaders and shakers from organizations and communities in rural Ontario. We’ve run the event for the last three years and over time have explored some interesting approaches to leadership – typically focusing on tools and techniques. We’ve explored creativity and innovation, storytelling, circle, and liberating structures. After taking part in an Art of Hosting training in Pembroke in 2011, I knew that it was something I wanted to offer at our Summit … and luckily our planning team was open to exploring this too!

Throughout 2012 we worked alongside an amazing hosting team – Tenneson Woolf, Jean Ogilvie and Erika Bailey (a great facilitator who was new to AoH) to create an experience that balanced principles, theory and reflection with hands-on practical take-aways that people can use in their organizations and communities – something that our audience really wanted. Of course Tenneson, Jean and Erika did a wonderful job meeting this need, and there were moments of transformation for many of the people present. It was really neat to watch a crowd of Board and staff members of rural and agricultural organizations, business leaders, farmers, municipal councilors and staff, etc – a crowd that often is ‘turned off’ by the “touchy-feely” stuff – open themselves up to the Art of Hosting – even if to simply explore new ways of holding meetings.

The feedback from the event was overly positive and I am hopeful that we will be taking another dive (perhaps a little deeper) into the Art of Hosting this year!

One of the neat things we were able to do for this event was to create a video. This video is mainly a promo for the Summit, but also showcases and reflects upon the Art of Hosting:

There are also other items that might be of use from the Summit including the workbook and blog: http://www.stepstoleadership.ca/steps-to-leadership-programs/leadin...

Thank you to you all for the ongoing teaching and inspiration!
