Hi Heather!

I've thought about responding to your e-mail for a while now, yet I've hesitated, as in the English-speaking world the work we do is not often perceived as being related to "Circle" approaches.

And then today, I received an e-mail newsletter (in German) from Matthias zur Bonsen, announcing two new books, both of which he has helped to birth. The first is his translation of "The Circle Way" into German, and the second is his translation of the Dynamic Facilitation manual, with additional chapters in German written by various European practitioners, including one by Matthias himself.

Two of the new chapters in the German-language book describe in detail the work that has been taking place in Vorarlberg with regard to participatory public policy. In addition to hosting several Art of Hosting trainings, the Office of Future-Related Issues has also been hosting Wisdom Councils (a large-system application of Dynamic Facilitation) to generate high-quality public input into municipal, regional, and state policy issues. Since 2006, they have hosted 35+ of these councils, and this highly cost-effective format has begun to spread in Germany and Switzerland. Here is a link to the English translation of an article that originally appeared in Biorama, an Austrian online magazine on sustainable living, describing this significant body of work.

If you are interested in any additional information, I can send you an English translation of two of the new German chapters, that are specifically focused on how has been applied in the context of civic politics. Also if you are interested there is an evaluation of this work, conducted by Kairos and the European Institute for Public Participation.

with all best wishes,

Dear Heather and list,

There is beautiful work unfolding with communities of catholic priests striving for a more participatory church. Art of Hosting held by Holger and Wal Heller, Martin Büchele, Marlene Steinbichler and Rainer von Leoprechting (me). It began with Holger meeting the head of the Pfarrerinitiative in Austria, where 400+ priests had signed a call for disobedience. More and more hosting principles came into the working of the association, they are now collaborating on a hosted way across many countries with like-minded initiatives from priests and church staff. Some of them see AoH as a promising model for community work at the parochial level. As the church is short of priests in Europe, the US and other 'old' countries, self-organization of the base communities of church members is an attractive option :-)

Warm regards from Austria,

Rainer

Hello everyone,

We use the AoH philosophy and practices now to act as stewards within the context of meetings. What about an ongoing organizational context? Can an organization be governed effectively in this way, over time? If so, what existing conditions are necessary (for example, does everyone need to be at a certain level of maturity/consciousness)? On what occasions would this not make sense (for example, when unilateral decisions are needed, or when speed is more important than emergence and engagement)? What additional support might be needed?

Helen Titchen Beeth wrote earlier today of the limitations of AoH as a governance system within the EU. In a simpler system, or one starting fresh without deep patterns of disfunction, might the story be different?

What has been the experience of the stewards of the global AoH network? Have you found that you had to draw on other disciplines or practices to be effective stewards of this "organization"?

Thanks for your thoughts on this!

Being so heavily involved in the Occupy Movement, I GREATLY look forward to everyone's answers here. I've been wanting to form a database of AoH-like best practices for small governance, but usually find the time and nuance necessary for emergence to be impractical in such fast moving, high stakes, middle of the road maturity-type of situations...
Ben Browner
-----------------
Hi Ben, Everyone.

Youth Engagement has a rich history of research and articulation. It aims to radically shift youth work toward being collaborative so that services work WITH young people not FOR young people.

Youth Engagement is Participatory Leadership. And when I realised this, I took all that I had learned in both fields and melded them. There is now a mandate from an Ontario governmet agency to deliver this teaching for free to any mental health agency in the province who requests it. There is a community of practice of mental health professionals and youth who receive or once received mental health services who are committed to support each other and others to deepen our Youth Engagement practice in order to strengthen our ability to respond to the mental health needs of young people.

The three journals below were developed for mental health professionals during courses that took place in January and March 2011. This work is evolving and certain to bring further and further evolutions of materials and journals as more and more courses are delivered.
